Emo Registry

Terms of Service

Last updated: October 18, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Emo Registry (the "Service"), the package registry for the Emo programming language. The Service lets people publish, discover, download, and manage packages and other content. By creating an account, publishing a package, downloading a package, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Who May Use the Service

You must be old enough to consent to online services under the laws of your jurisdiction, and you must have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to bind that organization, and "you" refers to both you and the organization.

2. Accounts and Security

  • Provide accurate account information and keep it up to date.
  • You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account, your organization scopes, and your API tokens, whether or not you authorized it.
  • Keep your password, session cookies, and API tokens confidential. Do not share accounts, and notify us promptly if you believe your credentials have been compromised.
  • Do not create accounts or organizations to evade a suspension, to impersonate someone else, or to reserve names for the purpose of selling them or blocking others.
  • We may reclaim, rename, or reserve usernames, organization names, and package names that are misleading, infringe another party's rights, or conflict with the policies of the Service.

3. Your Content

"Content" means packages, archives, source code, manifests, READMEs, metadata, and anything else you upload to or publish through the Service.

  • You retain all rights you hold in your Content. These Terms do not transfer ownership of your Content to us.
  • By publishing Content, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, transmit, distribute, display, and make backups of that Content as necessary to operate, provide, secure, and improve the Service. This license ends when you or we remove the Content from the Service, except for copies retained in backups, caches, archives, or as required by law.
  • You represent and warrant that you own or have all necessary rights, licenses, and permissions to publish your Content, and that your Content and our hosting of it do not infringe the intellectual property, privacy, or other rights of any third party.
  • Public packages may be viewed and downloaded by anyone. Private packages are visible only to the accounts, organizations, and tokens you authorize, but no system is perfectly secure and we cannot guarantee that private Content will never be disclosed.
  • We do not endorse, verify, or take responsibility for Content published by users. You are solely responsible for the Content you publish and for the licenses you grant with it.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to do any of the following:

  • Violate any applicable law, regulation, or court order.
  • Infringe any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, or other intellectual property right, or violate anyone's privacy or publicity rights.
  • Upload or distribute malware, viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, ransomware, or any code designed to damage or disable systems, gain unauthorized access, exfiltrate data, or harm users.
  • Impersonate another person, project, or organization, or use names, metadata, or logos that mislead users about the origin of a package.
  • Publish a package that mimics another package's name in order to deceive users into installing it (typosquatting), or otherwise abuse the trust users place in package names.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, probe or scan it, bypass authentication or rate limits, interfere with its operation, or disrupt other users' access.
  • Use the Service to send spam, scrape it at a volume that degrades performance, or create accounts or packages through automated means without our permission.
  • Publish content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, hateful, sexually exploitative, or that encourages violence or self-harm.
  • Upload other people's personal information, credentials, API keys, or other secrets without authorization.
  • Distribute packages that are designed to compromise the software supply chain, including malicious updates to otherwise legitimate packages.

5. Prohibited Content and Copyright Infringement

Packages that infringe copyright or other intellectual property rights are strictly prohibited. Any package that appears to infringe — for example, an unauthorized copy of another author's source code, binaries, assets, or documentation — will be locked, and may be removed from the Service entirely. Accounts and organizations that repeatedly publish infringing content will be suspended or terminated.

Locking means the package and everything under its scope stays listed but cannot be downloaded, resolved as a dependency, or modified. Removal means the package is deleted from the database and storage. We may apply either measure at our discretion, with or without prior notice, and we may report serious violations to the appropriate authorities.

Other prohibited content includes malware and other harmful code, content that is illegal in the jurisdiction in which the Service operates, content that impersonates another person or project, and content that violates the acceptable-use rules in Section 4. We may remove or lock any such content and suspend or terminate the account responsible for it.

6. Copyright Complaints

If you believe that Content on the Service infringes your copyright, send a notice to the maintainers through github.com/emo-lang/emoji-registry. Your notice should include:

  • Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed, or, when multiple works are covered, a representative list.
  • Identification of the allegedly infringing material, including the owner, package name, and version where available.
  • Your name and contact information.
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

We may lock or remove the material, notify the account that published it, and offer a counter-notice process. If a counter-notice is received, we may restore the material unless the complainant provides evidence of legal action. Knowingly submitting a false or misleading notice may expose you to liability. We will terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

7. Packages, Versions, and Removal

  • Published versions are immutable. To withdraw a version, yank it: a yanked version leaves dependency resolution but its archive remains downloadable so existing lockfiles keep working.
  • We may lock, yank, or remove any package or version that violates these Terms. Removal from the Service is permanent, and we are not obligated to restore Content that we removed.
  • Do not rely on the Service as your only backup. Keep your own copy of everything you publish.
  • We may impose storage, bandwidth, and publication limits, and may remove inactive or abandoned content at our discretion.

8. Our Intellectual Property

The Service itself — including its software, design, text, and trademarks, and the Emo name and logo — is owned by its operators or licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service in accordance with these Terms. Open-source components of the Service are governed by their respective licenses.

9. Third-Party Content and Links

Packages and other Content may include third-party code, dependencies, and licenses, and the Service may link to third-party sites. You are responsible for reviewing and complying with the licenses that apply to any package you use. We are not responsible for third-party content, and your dealings with third parties are solely between you and them.

10. Privacy

We collect the information needed to operate the Service — such as account details, hashed credentials, API tokens, download statistics, and server logs — and use it to provide, secure, and improve the Service. We do not sell your personal information. We may disclose information when required by law or when necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of the Service, its users, or the public. Do not publish personal information about others without their consent.

11. Availability and Changes to the Service

The Service is provided on an "as available" basis. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it, and may impose limits on its use, at any time. We will give reasonable notice where practical, but we do not guarantee any level of uptime, retention, or continued availability.

12. Disclaimer of Warranties

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND TITLE. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT ANY PACKAGE IS SAFE, ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR FREE OF MALWARE, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE. YOU USE PACKAGES DOWNLOADED FROM THE SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

13. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL THE OPERATORS OF THE SERVICE BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, GOODWILL, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS (USD 100).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages, so some of the above may not apply to you.

14. Indemnification

You will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the operators of the Service from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or related to your Content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or of any third party's rights.

15. Suspension and Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, in whole or in part, at any time if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, pose a risk to the Service or other users, or if required by law. You may stop using the Service at any time and may request removal of your account. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including Sections 3, 6, 8, and 12 through 18 — will survive.

16. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the revised Terms on this page and update the "Last updated" date above. For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you through the Service or by email. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of the revised Terms constitutes acceptance of them.

17. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable to the operator of the Service, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. You agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located where the operator is established, except where mandatory law provides otherwise. Before starting formal proceedings, please contact us and give us a reasonable opportunity to resolve the dispute informally.

18. General

These Terms are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service and supersede any prior understanding on the same subject. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or transfer of the Service. Headings are for convenience only.

19. Contact

Questions about these Terms, reports of prohibited content, and copyright notices should be sent through github.com/emo-lang/emoji-registry.
